The answer is Henrietta Lacks (although she was named Loretta Pleasant at birth). She was an American Black woman. Her cancer cells were harvested in 1951. They have been and are still being used in medical research around the world. The HeLa cell line has been used to study and create vaccines from the Polio vaccine to the HPV vaccine. These cells have been used to research Cancer, HIV, Gene Mapping and many other research topics. These cells have even gone into space. Read more about Henrietta, her life, and legacy in the book by Rebecca Skloot called “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”. http://rebeccaskloot.com/the-immortal-life/
